Fashion Week- Day 4

Hey, everyone!! I'm sorry for not updating the past couple of days, The sudden passing of Whitney Houston made me unfocused and The Grammys were spectacular! I must say its tough to stay on a project when an awards show is in the same weekend as Fashion Week. Anyway, here is my review of Day 4. We have reached the middle of fashion week, and the designers get better by the day. Today had the creme de la crop of designers such as: my idol, Betsey Johnson, Fashion Extraordinaire Carolina Herrera and DKNY's Donna Karan.

Carolina started the day at 10am ET. Herrera is a legend at knowing the woman's body and what fits on a woman. Her show exuded simple ellegance yet made a statement with her floor length gowns. Most of the pieces were in navy and a couple of the sihloettes were in fuschia which is rare for fall. One piece that blew my mind was a fitted floor length gown that was sequined in silver in gold, all over and a skinny belt around the waist. The models had very natrual looking makeup, which has been the trend of the shows and bouffant hair simple pulled back with a headband. Herrera just has that appeal, where you know something "magical" is going to happen and a story is going to be told.


courtesy photo:www.gettyimages.com This was my favorite dress of the show because it is in a way, whimsical from the flowing chiffon at the bottom, to the sequins all over. This is a dress that requires absolutly no accessories because the dress itself is an accessory.

I love the pop of color with the shoes and the overall feel to this look.

courtesyphoto: http://www.gettyimages.com/ This coat is gorgeous and perfect for fall! I love the navy sleeves, which is an unexpected, yet fun suprise and this look just reminds me of Breakfast at Tiffanys with it simple, 60's class and glamour.

It was a feeling as if I was falling in love all over again. Just that warm, fuzzy feeling when you know you are watching something cinematic and breath-taking unfold.

The next designer to present was Zang Toi, and I honestly haven't heard of him until today but his show was remarkable and genius. He played Adele's music as the background music, which had me immediatly. His style is very avant garde with theatrical pieces. His palette of colors were very bright for fall with minimal black. He used colors such as melon, fuschia, mustard, and orange and literally combined these colors all into one. He used silk for, if not all, of his designs and the pattern was reminiscent of patchwork and some of the colors looked as if they were brushed on like paint. The show then transitioned to all white fabrics which reminds me of Derek Zoolander for some reason . . .

Next was Betsey Johnson, who my friends and family know very well that I might as well be kissing the ground this woman walks on. She is my favorite designer of all time and part of the reason I have gotten into fashion. Her fall show has a dark feel to it, but dubbed "Betseymania" in neion colors over a very dark background and playing poppy 60's music and she has brought back her wild 60's inspired style for the fall season.  Johnson featured the fun side of 60's style with neon tights, turtlenecks with khaki jackets, floral prints and go-go boots. She also featured tweed suits with fun colors.

Fashion Week- Day 2

Todays shows started a little later during the day, but were just as anticipated as the day before. Rebecca Taylor started the series of shows for the day at 2pm ET.

Rebecca Taylor's show consisted of a very simple concept for the show's backround with a plain white backdrop and white run way. The style covered the basics of fall with layers and a dark palette, but was very wearable and feminine which is Taylor's go-to inspiration for most of her shows. The textures were very flirty and sophisticated with ruffles and some geometrical and floral prints. The dresses had a very laid back approach with simple cotton fabric with dark hues.

Taylor mixed leather and a textured jacket with fur boots to draw the attention.  One major look throughout the show was the wrapped around mid calf boots and dark tights.

The fitted top is a cool contrast not only in fit, but in color and texture. This is my favorite look from the show because it can be an outfir thats easy to look pulled together in.


Rebecca Minkoff was the next show of the day and the show from my opinion didnt have an exact theme or main look. The styles were very eclectic there wasn't a main look for the entire show. Minkoff went away from the usual and used colors such as mustard, rust, sequin gold and royal blue. I loved the idea because it wasn't boring and each look kept me guessing and keeps the show exciting. The hair and makeup was very natrual and carefree which was a cool contrast to Minkoff's eccentric designs.


courtesy photo: http://www.gettyimages.com/ Minkoff showed the crowd a flowing maxi dress with a quaint print which reminds me of pieces from a french boutique. I love the cute print and the wrapped belt with cinches the wait giving the illusion of curves and giving the flowy dress, shape.


courtesy photo:www.gettyimages.com Minkoff made a bold move mxing black with brown, but makes it work because of the separation of colors using a bright color as contrast. I applaud mixing the tough leather with a flowy dress as a way of playing with textures and giving the dress shape.

Nicole Miller's show suppressed my appetitie for 60's bohemian glam. Loose tops, wide brim hats, floral prints and oversized vests. I loved the smokey eye used and the long, stick-straight hair on the models, whom were reminiscent of those from the era, such as Bridget Bardot and Edie Sedgewick. This was my favorite show of the day because this is my go-to style, and perfect for fall!

courtesy photo:www.gettyimages.com Fringe is a major trend in this season's shows and you couldn't have a 60's themed show with a little military jacket and a lot of layered fringe. Also a leopard print wide brim hat just puts the cherry on this sundae.

Fashion Week: Day 1

Fashion Week kicked off with Nicholas K's gothic- western themed show with blasting techno music. The color scheme was aminly neutrals and blacks with the models rocking dark wigs and lips. There was a large variety of fringe and leather with black and brown hues mix "hard and soft" The show started with the theme from "kill Bill" which excited the crowd immediatly. One piece that wowed the crowd was a one shoulder dress that had a thin strap going diagonally down the model's back which added for a cool unexpected and dramatic back. This show also hinted that we could see maxi dresses in the fall. Some of the dresses I got a flapper feel to them with the fringe all around the body and some were boho with neutral colors and straight lines. The only thing I didn't like were the turtle shell necklaces because I think they could have had another statement piece that wasn't as literal with the "annie get your gun" theme

This was a main look of the female models, with a dark lip and dark, short wigs. perfect colors for the fall and is a cool and sophicated look.

BCBG had much, if not all, sihloettes that had color blaocking which had toned down colors such as khaki, mustard, rouge,and navy. the show started with neutral colors but soon transitioned to brighter and by the end, blending the two palletes together which tied together the concept of the show. The makeup was very minimal, which brought out the models natural beauty and kept the look very "clean" and "modern." The hair complimented the makeup with a slick, low pony tail. Also this brings back the prdeiction that flowy maxi dresses could be brought back for the fall season. Another trend I spotted was the classic high waist pants with a cropped jacket and modernized it with color blocking.

Richard Chai (former designer to Marc Jacobs) had a show that featured very wearable pieces that could be suited for the office. The music had a vun jazz vibe and the looks seemed very masculine/ katherine hepburn inspired. One model tripped during the show, but she recovered like a pro! The show started with bold horizontal stripes with blacks and greys tunics and pants, then transitioned to rust colored jackets and floral prints. Much of the models had natrual makeup and wore high waist trousers and skirts with white blouses and burgundy jackets. I loved the belted jackets, which were perfect for fall and the androgonyous feel to the show. The styles for the show were very clean and had a preppy menswear feel .

Tadashi Shoji brought back old Hollywood glamor in his show with classic orchestral music playing. The models had basic makeup except for a bold red lip. Their hair was a simple low bun which went with the theme. The dresses had ruffles all along the fabric and some had floral prints. One jaw dropping piece was a simple red a-line gown (or so it seemed) until she turned around and dramatic black lace along the shoulder blades. Another was a dark green velvet gown which had the crowd in awe. the gowns were reminiscent of what Audrey Hepburn would have worn. The show screamed elegance with a chandlier print as the back ground. I got chills as I was watching these gown just glide across the seemingly endless runway. This was without a doubt my favorite show of the day

Fashion Week

Soo. tonight my mood is pretty elevated since that very exciting win from the New York Giants (sit-down touchdown, anyone?) not to mention this week kicks off one of the best weeks of the year: Spring/Summer Fashion Week! Youtube is a savior for u-streaming ALL of the shows from New York, which makes me able to watch and critique from the comfort of my queen size bed. What a perfect way to temporarily go away from the chilly winter blues and look forward to the trends to come this Spring! Many websites such as Tommy Hilfiger are already promoting for their shows and my Girl, Betsey Johnson pays tribute to "The twelve days of Christmas" to "the tweleve days of Betsey" which every day, Miss Johnson posts a new picture on facebook, everyday to give hints up the show up until the day of. Well it is getting late and my hot tea with honey is starting to do it's magic on my insomina. goodnight everyone and up until next time, stay fabulous!

SAG awards: Best and Worst

Last night's SAG awards had everything typical of a Hollywood soiree including great and not-so-great-styles. Here is (in my opinion) the best and worst lookds from that night

The Help star Emma Stone rocked this tea length vintage dress with mary jane peep toe pumps, a bejeweled clutch and a bold bronze knuckle ring. Her makeup can be an example of whats to come for this spring with simple everything except a bright lip is a fun contrast to her porclain skin. The ruffles on the shoe do exactly what an acessory should do: highlight the dress. The ruffles along the bust are a cool way to add texture to what could have been a simple little black dress.

Fuschia was a popular color last night and this was my favorite silhoette for it. Glee's Dianna Agron's look has been quite matronly in the past year and this is a breath of fresh air. The fish tail braid along the front of her face is a fun bohemian touch to the loose and laid back look of the dress. I love the simplicity, and its not boring because of the hue of the dress. Her face is very similar to the late Grace Kelly and she has remarkable natural beauty. The neckine of the dress shows just the right amount of cleavage and the tie along the waist, cinches it and gives the illusion of curves. This was a welcomed and youthful look that we dont see that often on  her.

The Office's John Krasinski looked incredible in this slim cut navy tux. I love how the tie if the same color of the tuxedo and the embellishment around the blazer which makes him look devinrerre. The look is very simple but theres not much needed for mens wear to pull off a look. The double breasted buttons of the blazer is a very classic yet cool look.

This was a very bold look for The Closer's Kyra Sedgewick because someone of her age wouldn't go near a dress with this cut. She looks stunning in this coral gown and it lookds like ti fits her like a glove. The diamond shape along the rib cage with the halter is a fun and carefree look with the loose waves and bronze bangles. This is another example of a very simple look yet not boring because of the color and cut along the sides.

BridesMaid's Rose Bryne took a very daring change with this white jumpsuit yet it looks effortless. This is a look that you either love it or hate it and im in between. She avoids the "disco queen" factor with being minimal on the jewelry and the THOUSANDS of pearls embedded on the dress. I think the two trends of draping and embriodery are a little much, together, but the fit is perfect for her frame and she resembles hollywood glam and other than the jumpsuit she keeps the ascessories minimal.

I think The Decendents star Shailene Woodley took filming in Hawaii a little too seriously. This looks like the younger version of our grandmas moomoo that the kids took to a sewing machine. The neckline does nothing for her, no jewelry at all to save herself, her roots are a greasy mess and this looks like a 12 year old dressed her. Just sad because she really is a natrually pretty girl.

BridesMaid's Kristen Wiig should know that dog collars don't belong on people. The clutch is random (where did the peach color come from??) and  the choker takes away (in a bad way) the neckline of the terribly boring dress. This is why Coco Chanel always said you should take one thing off before leaving the house.

I understand the look Glee's Amber Riley was going for, but this is TOO MUCH! From the oversized awkward bow on the bustline, the hip pockets on the dress, the sash along the waist, the vintage wall paper pattern on the fabric and to top THAT all off, the chunky maryjanes that makes me wonder if the stylists got into an acessory fight and couldn' exactly decide what would look good so they just put everything on her. just too much going on at once. Also this look is very costum-y and looks cheap.

I'm not sure what was going through Glee's Heather Morris's head, but I think she took theaticality way too far! This looks like a witches costume and the hair is just wrong. In fact everything about this look is wrong . . . .

This is a high fashion look that Avatar's Zoe Saldana usually goes for but I am not so sure about this with the sheer cape, dress with straps so thick it looks like a wife beater tank top sewed togeher with a skirt that was inspired by a lamp. I dont understand why they are jewels along the hem line and this look seems too old for Zoe. Especially with her hair pulled back, she looks very matronly.

Jason Wu for Target

Jason Wu has become the next sensation to follow in the paths of high end designers loaning their materials and style genuis to the oh, so deserving hands of the general public. Not to mention the prices are below the usual margins someone like Jason Wu would offer on a regular basis.Wu's line will be available to the public on Feb. 5th, but we can get a preview RIGHT NOW! if you are not familar, Jason Wu is  rather "fresh face" to the industry but is quickly gaining popularity for his designs. He gained popularity with socialites of the big apple with his effortless yet elegant designs. His attention to detail and clean silhoettes contrast with fun bright yet sophisticated shades of colors. Which in point sumed up to retro romanic designs modernized with fun colors. he follows this type of "motto," for say, with his Target line, which is actually genius because nothing in the line looks too much of something or over the top like you would sometimes see on a runway show. This is obviously tailored towards the average woman for work, or a cocktail party. One thing I must say is that with the pictures, I am not a fan of the sheer socks with heels because it reminds me of someone trying look like a doll or a child.


coutesy photo: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/, If you are like me, who's a sucker for sheer cutouts, I love the fun, floral prairie like print with the sheer cutout neckiline which gives this dress an eclectic vibe that you wouldnt expect from such a "down home" print. This would be a great party dress or shopping in the spring. The clutch are great because they don't compete with the print and match the dress. I'm not sure about the sheer socks with the heels because they cut her off at a weird angle with the hemline of the dress which is drawing my eyes toward her thighs, which most ladies DON'T want.

This trend of high waist skirts and fitted blouses were everywhere last fall and this a perfect example that clothes from fall can be recycled for spring. The skirt which goes out along the hem line creates the illusion of an hourglass waist and nude heels are very subtle yet very sexy, ladies! This goes along the phrase "Less is more" which is a phrase that should be used very carefully, these days. I imagine this look for work because it is conservative enough for the office but not like a doubty work-a-holic who sits behind a cublicle. This shows that it is possible to have fun with your work clothes and still look office appropriate.

It has the classic yet romantic neck line yet with a flirty twist with black ruflles slightly under the hem line. The skinny belt accentuates a waist and heres a note: show off those gams! They say, show off one major body part and minimize everything else because this draws to the imagination for the guys. But show it off in a classy way because, I'm sorry, but over exposure is raunchy, not sexy.

new year, new trends

HELOOOOOO anyone who is reading!!!
   I'm back after much needed break and I have been gathering my thoughts and ready to spill the hot trends I have spotted over the season. Much to my wondering eye, I spotted much of color coming back! (Thank goodness!). As much as I love the whole, fall neutral somber look, I feel as much as probably others that it's time to bring back pastels and fun neons into the mix. One major trend I remember from fall fashion week which could be a good depiction of what could be seen much this year is color blocking. May I remind you that "color blocking" is bold, solid colors stacked onto each other. Such as, I spotted many shades such as teals and coral colors put together with non-fuss silhoettes (sorry for the spelling!). This is a very clean look and very put together but without the fuss and with the bright colors means none to little use for acessories. Let's say it together,  (Less.is.more.). if you aren't quite sure about adding colors you can go for a small pop of color to light up something that has minimal color. if you feel ready for the trend, stick to three colors or less to avoid the "clown effect."
   Another trend I have spotted coming from the models is bold bright lip shades with bold (yet shapen) eye brows. I adore this trend and I love a good bold brow to be honest. Also, the bright lip that strays from usual red and shows us colors such as fun pinks puts a modern twist on this trend. Models for the shows tend to bring the bold brow to the extreme for runway shows, so a simple everday wearable tip (if those of you aren't fortunate enough to have the genes for bold brows) is using an eyebrow pencil and shading in your eye brows to bring in more attention to the face. also to shape the brows, just tweeze or wax around the outside. Remember to keep the eye makeup mininal so it isn't competing for attention with your brows and keep this is mind if you are going for a bright lip. One important makeup tip I still remember to this day is pick one area of the face to accentuate and never more than one. Another tip with eye brows is to keep them looking natural. For example if you have light hair make sure to not make the brows too dark and likewise for those with dark hair.
    One trend I am very partial to is layering acessories. One important advice that is said by the great Coco Chanel is, "always take one acessory off before leaving the house." Make sure that if you are going to layer is to make sure that the pieces are different lengths and one piece isnt overpowering the other. With jewelry trends, they are going beyond the simple silver and gold, and adding colored gems. These can be great with a simple outfit to "jazz it up." Much of the jewelry this year is going to have a tribal vibe with large bright gems and fun colors. With fun colors come bold prints that made a huge appearance in runway shows last fall. Much of the pieces were geometrical or floral and can add personality to a simple outfit. There were also prints that were pixelated and had a "futursitic feel" to them. remember when going for this trend to use one pattern and accentuate it! \
   if you arent feeling the accessories, why not try clothes that have an accessory feel? metallic is not only for shoes or bags, anymore. The silvery material was found on pants and skirts and can brighten up something as simple as a blouse. Not only were they spotted in the usual metals, but fun bright colors such as emerald green were spotted.
   Of course with spring comes pastel colors, but styles put a different turn on the usually candy egg bright colors. They lowered the hue a bit and gave a more mature feel to the trend which could be perfect for a garden party or spring outting in general. These were featured on many dresses that showed off the legs which is perfect for spring. With the prim and proper aspect of spring coming into the stores, were tops that had ruffle along the waist which added dimension and the illusion of curves to pencil skirts and cropped pants. This look will show off your best features in the most flattering way!
